Claude has a built-in tool that pulls your stored memory and context out of ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, or any other AI, and loads it into your Claude account. In about two minutes, you'll have your accumulated context inside Claude so you don't have to rebuild from scratch.
🎯 You get: Your existing ChatGPT (or other AI) memory loaded into Claude
✅ Bring: A Claude account (Free, Pro, or Max), a ChatGPT account with memory on (or any AI you use), both tabs open in your browser
👤 Best for: Anyone switching to Claude from ChatGPT, Gemini, or another AI and wanting to keep their context
🎯 What you'll be able to do
By the end of this playbook:
🛠️ Part 1: Get the prompt from Claude
Open Claude's import tool and copy the prompt Claude provides.
Step 1: Open Claude and go to settings
Step 2: Open the memory section
In the Settings sidebar, select "Capabilities", then look for the Memory section.
Recent UI view from Claude:
Step 3: Start the import
Find the section labeled "Import memory from other AI providers".
Select "Start import".
A new panel opens with the import prompt inside it.
Step 4: Copy the prompt
Select the "Copy prompt" button (or the small copy icon next to the prompt).
The prompt is now on your clipboard.
Keep this Claude tab open. You're coming back to it.
🛠️ Part 2: Run the prompt in your other AI
Paste the prompt into ChatGPT (or Gemini, Grok, etc.) so it can pull your stored memories into one response.
Step 5: Open ChatGPT in a new tab
Go to chatgpt.com and sign in.
Start a new conversation.
If you're importing from Gemini or Grok instead, open that tool and start a fresh chat there.
Step 6: Paste the prompt and send it
Paste the prompt you copied from Claude into the chat box.
Press Enter to send.
ChatGPT starts pulling your stored memories into a single structured response. This takes a few seconds to a minute.
Step 7: Copy the entire response
Once ChatGPT finishes generating, scroll through the response.
Some of it may look like raw data or formatting. That's expected.
Select the entire response and copy it.
🛠️ Part 3: Add it to Claude's memory
Paste the export back into Claude and submit it.
Step 8: Return to the Claude tab
Switch back to the Claude tab you left open.
The import box should still be on screen.
If you closed it, go back to Settings → Capabilities → "Start import" to reopen it.
Step 9: Paste the response and submit
Paste the entire ChatGPT response into the import box.
Select "Add to memory".
Claude confirms the import has started and begins processing the content.
Step 10: Check what Claude saved
Go to Settings → Capabilities → "View and edit your memory".
You'll see what Claude pulled from the import.
Memory keeps incorporating for up to 24 hours, so the list may grow over the next day.
⚡ 2 things that will trip you up
Empty export means the memory was off
If ChatGPT's response is short or empty, memory was likely turned off in your ChatGPT settings.
Memory only captures context if it was on when you used the tool.
Fix: Turn it on at ChatGPT → Settings → Personalization → Memory, use ChatGPT for a few weeks, then try the import again.
Memory updates are not instant
Claude processes memory in daily synthesis cycles, not in real time.
Imported context may not show up in conversations right away.
Fix: Wait 24 hours before assuming the import failed. Then check "View and edit your memory" again.
✅ You're done when
📌 The bottom line
Your AI memory is your accumulated context: preferences, history, and patterns the tool learned about you over months of use. Leaving it behind when you switch means starting over.
Claude's import tool copies that context in about two minutes. You paste one prompt, copy one response, and submit it. After that, Claude knows what your other AI knew, and you pick up where you left off instead of re-teaching from scratch.
